Kitchen Tip: Masking the Bitterness of a Grapefruit

Grapefruits are a wonderful source of nutrients.  They are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene.  Unfortunately, I have never been the biggest fan of the bitterness of a plain grapefruit.  To make these more tasty, my mom has taught me to top these with melted light brown sugar.

Preheat your oven to 325*F… slice your grapefruit in half and, with a sharp knife, whittle the little sections, loosening them from the skin.  Sprinkle with light brown sugar.  Place on a cookie sheet and put into your oven for a few minutes.  Once the light brown sugar has melted, remove from oven and enjoy.

(Once the brown sugar is all melted, your cut out pieces of grapefruit will look ‘swollen’.)

*Quick tip: dark brown sugar vs. light brown sugar… dark brown sugar contains more molasses than light brown sugar.  To have a more subtle brown sugar taste, stick with the light brown sugar for paring with grapefruit.

**Fun Fact: a grapefruit is considered a ‘Hybrid Citrus’… with one parent being the Sweet Orange, and the other being the Pomelo.
